General Purpose
-This applet was designed to illustrate the impact on the descriptive statistics of a
data set caused by adding a new data point.
The applet opens up with four
windows:
-About: information area
-Descriptive Statistics: output area
-Dot Plot: interactive plot
-Data Controller: gives ability to change sample size,
add data points, or sample from several different
distributions
The applet has four menu bars
-File: Use this to restart or quit the
applet
-Data: Use this to open or close the
Data Controller and Descriptive Stats windows and to
set a seed for random number generation
-Plot: Use this to select various
data plotting options
-About: Use this to open the About menu
Dot Plot
Move the mouse across the dot plot and see how
adding a new point affects the descriptive statistics
of the original data set.
Click on the dot plot to add the point to the data set. Note this adds the point to every plot.
Click Restart under the File menu or Regenerate on
the Data Controller window to generate a new data set.
Select from the list of distributions in the Data
Controller Window to change the distribution of the
data.
The ECDF and Quantile
plots have the same interactive features.
Interactive Dot Plot
Histogram
Histogram
Click on Plots and select Histogram
Use the slider on the x-axis to adjust the width
of the intervals for the bars, e.g. moving the slider
all the way to the right will give very small
intervals.
This plot is updated when points are added to the data set but
clicking on this plot will not update the data set.
Click Restart under the File menu or Regenerate on
the Data Controller window to generate a new data set.
Select from the list of distributions in the Data
Controller Window to change the distribution of the
data.
